PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress droplet fuel from adhering or remaining in a recessed part in a direct injection internal combustion engine in which fuel is injected toward an inner wall face of the recessed part formed at a lower wall face of a cylinder head. SOLUTION: In this internal combustion engine, a combustion chamber R is defined and formed by the lower wall face of the cylinder head 20, an inner wall face of a cylinder, and an upper wall face of a piston 30. The recessed part 21 is formed on the lower wall face of the cylinder head 20, and fuel is directly injected toward the inner wall face of the recessed part 21 from an injection hole 41 of a fuel injection valve 40 inside the combustion chamber R. A distance (equal to D1) from an axis of the cylinder to a portion (intersection part A) where an axis X of fuel spray formed by the fuel injection crosses with the inner wall face of the recessed part 21 is larger than a distance (equal to D2) from the axis of the cylinder on the inner wall face of the cylinder. The distance from the injection hole 41 to the intersection part A on the axis X of fuel spray can be made sufficiently long, and contact of the droplet fuel with the recessed part 21 can be suppressed.
