PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce exchange interaction between magnetic crystal grains while promoting formation of a grain boundary having a wide width and no defect without deteriorating crystal aligning properties of a magnetic recording layer in an initial growth layer of the magnetic recording medium having a granular structure, and to thereby allow magnetization inversion within the magnetic recording layer to be accurately controlled in a small inversion unit to achieve high density recording. SOLUTION: An intermediate layer 14 having a granular structure similar to that of the magnetic recording layer 15 is formed at a lower part of the magnetic recording layer 15. Accordingly a continuous grain boundary is formed in an interface between the magnetic recording layer 15 and the intermediate layer 14 and imperfect formation of the grain boundary in the initial growth layer of the magnetic recording layer 15 is prevented. The intermediate layer 14 is constituted of a non-magnetic alloy consisting essentially of Co and Cr and oxides of Al, Cr, Hf, Mg, Nb, Si, Ta, Ti, Zn and the like.
