A device, for the washing or wet-treatment of materials which are lighter than the washing medium, having a container for a liquid bath for the material and a conveying means which comprises a perforated element, e.g. a straight or curved perforated plate or screen which is arranged on a driving means, the driving means being so constructed that the perforated element at least over part of the path of conveyance of the material in the liquid bath is moved in the desired direction of conveyance of the material and the perforated element is immersed in the bath at the beginning of the movement through the bath and is lifted out of the bath at the end of the conveying movement, and the perforated element is provided with side walls and is so arranged that the liquid passes through the perforations in an upward direction, the material being pressed against the perforated element from below by the liquid passing through the perforations, and the material being thus forced to accompany the movement of the perforated element whilst during another part of the movement of the perforated element the material is released from it by the movement of the stream of liquid in the reverse direction. Various apparatus shown for carrying out this process include perforated rotating drums 16 eccentrically mounted at 15 so as alternately to suck in and flow out (Figs. 1 and 2) liquid; a pontoon 19 and eccentrics 20 (Fig. 3); a sieve drum 6 divided into individual cells having perforated jackets 4 (Fig. 5); a series of such sieve drums 8 mounted on shaft 7 (Fig. 6) and containers 13 with openings 13a mounted on a conveyer belt 10 (Fig. 7).
