PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve image quality and reduce a cost by reducing a delay in discharge and a discharge voltage, in an image display device such as a PDP using ultraviolet emission generated by discharge. SOLUTION: In this image display device using ultraviolet emission by discharge includes in a discharge space a phosphor having a 1/10 afterglow time of 1 ms or longer and an emitted light wavelength in a range of 200 to 460 nm in which light emitting intensity becomes the maximum. Image quality is improved more effectively by increasing the 1/10 afterglow time to 8 ms or longer, and image quality is further effectively improved by increasing the 1/10 afterglow time to 100 ms or longer. Alternatively, in an image display device using ultraviolet emission by discharge, a phosphor is included in which if the maximum value of intervals from discharges (sustain discharges) in one discharge space in order to perform light emission display to discharges (address discharges) in order to determine the presence/absence of discharges in the discharge space is denoted as t, the emitted light wavelength is in a range of 200 to 460 nm in which the 1/10 afterglow time is t or longer and the light emitting intensity becomes the maximum.
