PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an evaluation method for evaluating a coating film as a whole and predicting its reliability of running durability. SOLUTION: The method for evaluating magnetic recording medium determines reliability of the magnetic recording medium by pushing an indenter needle with a tip surface whose area is larger than 10,000μm<SP>2</SP>vertically with a constant indentation load to a magnetic layer surface of a magnetic recording medium having a magnetic layer including magnetic particles and binder on one surface of a non magnetic base, and evaluating a contact stiffness which works on the indenter needle when unloading vertically the tip of the indenter needle to the magnetic layer.
