Method for reducing the uncertainty of the measured average PMD of a long fiber

A methodology, device and memory medium for measuring the polarization mode dispersion (PMD) of an optical fiber is disclosed. The root mean square (rms) differential group delay (DGD) of fiber sections is estimated, the multisection DGD value tauSigma is calculated, and a determination is made as to how much the value tauSigma is likely to differ from the true mulitsection rms value tauSigmarms.
