A liquid crystal display comprises a liquid crystal display panel and first and second light diffusing layers each having first and second major surfaces. The front surface of the liquid crystal panel is viewed by the viewer. The first major surface of each light diffusing layer is oriented toward the front surface of the liquid crystal display panel. Each of the light diffusing layers independently includes a first region made of a first material having a first refractive index N1 and second regions made of a second material having a second refractive index N2 (1). The second regions are arranged in the first region at a pitch P in a direction parallel to the second major surface. The interface between each second region and the first region is inclined at an angle a with respect to the normal of the second major surface. The first light diffusing layer is nearer to the liquid crystal panel than the second one. The second regions of the first light diffusing layer are arranged like stripes along the horizontal direction of the liquid crystal panel. According to the invention, the angle-of-view characteristic of a direct-view liquid crystal display is improved thanks to the light diffusing layers using total reflection.
