Directional drilling control assembly utilising an electromagnetic torque device

A directional drilling control system for downhole drilling includes a step up gearbox 102 having an input connection 100 for connection to and driving co-operation with a rotatable drill pipe 10. Also included is an electromagnetic torque device such a clutch having a rotor 110 connected to and driven by the output of the step-up gearbox and a stator 116 having output connection means 104 for connection to a bent housing to drive the bent housing. A drilling head may also be included incorporating the bent hosing (18, fig 1) where the rotational orientation of the drilling head determines the deviation angle of a bore hole being drilled.
