Passenger detection system

The system has a capacitance-based occupant detection device to generate an occupation signal in response to occupation of a vehicle seat by an occupant e.g. child. A weight-based occupant detection device generates another occupation signal in response to occupation of the vehicle seat by the occupant and comprises a switch (10) provided under a seat surface. A controller generates an occupation confirmation signal when the occupation signals are present. The controller generates an error signal when the former occupation signal is not present and the latter occupation signal is present.
