A small, low-cost unit imitating a small and controlled galvanisation unit and providing as product the typical byproduct of a galvanisation unit, iron(II) sulfate, which is oxidised to trivalent iron in the most economical way on-site, by using the cheapest acid for the production of these salts (sulfuric acid), so that it is used in treatments where an increased addition of acidity and the cheapest and easier source of metal, iron in the form of scrap, is required. The unit is essentially a ôbatteryö with consumable iron electrodes, continuous addition of electrolyte in the form of a sulfuric acid solution, the by-product of which, iron(II) sulfate, is oxidised on-site by air that is continously heated by the combustion of another gaseous by-product of the ôbatteryö, the hydrogen. The unit requires small tanks, of simple construction, operating at atmospheric pressure, its operation can be easily adjusted, it operates at low temperatures (50-70 oC), and produces on-site, continously or non-continuously, iron(III) sulfate (in a yield higher than 90%) of high flocculation capacity, especially for wastes that require strong acidic flocculants. |
