The ship winch (1) has frame (2) attached to deck of ship. A drum (4) rotatable about drum axis (12) has winding surface (8) extending between axial ends and is suitable for accommodating several turns of line. The drum is rotated to receive and release incoming line portion and outgoing line portion of line near axial ends. A tightening element (18) engages with outgoing line portion for exerting tensile stress on turns. A retaining element (20) feeds incoming line portion to winding surface in metered manner, so that turns come to lie against winding surface.
