The invention relates to a process for machining a structured surface of an embossing tool, in which process the whole of the surface is provided with a first metallic coating (6). In order to increase the possible ways of configuring structured surfaces, the invention proposes that at least one further metallic coating (7) be arranged in predetermined regions on the first coating (6), wherein the gloss of the first coating (6) differs from that of the further coating (7). This measure makes it possible to recreate wood pores, for example, in a significantly improved manner.
