The invention relates to a method for the detection of markers in contaminated nonpolar liquids. According to the invention, (a) one or more, the same or different, markers are present in the contaminated unpolar liquid, (b) a polar liquid is contacted with the unpolar liquid, and (c) the marker is detected in the unpolar liquid. The invention further relates to methods for marking contaminated unpolar liquids and to the use of polar liquids for improving the detectability of markers in unpolar liquids.
