The invention relates to a mould of adjustable width for the continuous casting of steel or a steel alloy, with a wide side and a narrow side, which can be changed in its position such that the width of the strand is adjustable during the casting, wherein each narrow side has an inner subregion and in each case two outer subregions, wherein the outer subregions of the narrow side are provided between the wide side and the inner subregion of the narrow side and, at least in certain regions, the outer subregions of the narrow sides form an angle of less than 90° with the wide sides, so that a slab with a bevel is cast between the narrow side and the wide side. The object of proposing measures by which a skin defect can be prevented, and at the same time slabs with oversize can be used in the hot strip mill, is achieved with a mould of the type in question by providing that the outer ends of the subregions of the narrow side are flattened and the flattened ends have a wall thickness of from 0.5 mm to 5 mm, measured in the direction of the wide side.
