A device comprising a sample compartment (1), a coil (2) and an arm (3) for mechanical manipulation of a sample vessel placed in the sample compartment (1) and containing a sample is described. The coil (2) is surrounding the sample compartment (1) and the sample compartment (1) has an opening (4) for insertion and removal of the sample vessel. A method, using the device according to the invention for detection of magnetic permeability, relative magnetic permeability or relative magnetic susceptibility, is also described.
