PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a video recording apparatus to prevent users from being disabled to record and replay user-requested programs (contents) that are locked for recording or have formats prohibiting direct recording by recording programs in a format that permits recording. SOLUTION: The recording apparatus related to the present invention comprises a recording method setting means (21-1) to set a recording method by a user operation, a recording format detecting means (23-1) to detect a recording format of a recording medium, a storing means (23-2) to store recording methods and recording formats, recording means (3, 5, 11, 13, 15, and 17) to store programs, a judging means (23-3) to judge whether the recording method and format of a program to be recorded by the recording means are equal to those stored in the memory means and the program is recordable, and a recording method selecting means (23-4) to select an available recording method when the recording method and format of the program are not fit for recording as the result of the judgment.
