PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fuel which has good knock resistance and provides good starting characteristics (particularly in a low temperature environment). SOLUTION: The fuel includes a normal paraffin-type fuel and/or an isoparaffin-type fuel as a main component and a furan compound represented by general formula (A). The volume mixing ratio of the furan compound satisfies the relation of x<SB>1</SB><x<x<SB>2</SB>, wherein x<SB>1</SB>: the minimum mixing ratio of the furan compound at which the octane number is 89 or more [volume%], and x<SB>2</SB>: the mixing ratio of the furan compound at which the reduction in intake-air temperature is 10°C or more when the furan compound is contained as compared with the case where the furan compound is not contained [volume%].
