PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shift device capable of reliably suppressing any unexpected speed change operation. SOLUTION: In a by-wire type shift device, three fitting recesses 41r, 41n, 41d corresponding to the turning operation positions of a knob are formed on an outer circumferential surface of a shaft member 31. A first fitting projecting part 42a to be fitted in the fitting recesses 41r, 41n, 41d is formed on an inner circumferential surface of an insertion hole 32 of a housing 21. When the knob is turned to each turning position, the fitting recesses 41r, 41n, 41d are opposite to the first fitting projecting part 42a. The sliding operation to the side of the knob is permitted as the operation for defining the change to the speed change position corresponding to one turning position only when being subjected to any one turning operation out of a plurality of turning positions set corresponding to the speed change position of an automatic transmission through the operation of the knob. In other words, when changing the speed change position of the automatic transmission, the operations in two different directions of the turning operation and the sliding operation to the side of the knob are necessary.
