PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique which can notify a user of a message content without interrupting a main screen display when performing a message display in one screen of multi-screen display. SOLUTION: Upon the start of PinP display processing on the side of an external device 41 (S1), a reduction rate of a screen is inquired of a TV (A) from the external device 41 (S2). In response to the inquiry, the reduction rate of the screen is notified from the TV (A) to the external device 41 being a slave screen, by a CEC command of HDMI (S3). The external device 41 changes normal error message display to an icon having such a size that the icon can be recognized in the slave screen, in accordance with the notified reduction rate notified in the step S3 to display an error message. When the notified reduction rate is equal to or lower than a fixed value in the step S4 (Y in S4), the control flow advances to S5 to display an icon corresponding to a degree of importance throughout the slave screen because it is judged that messages are difficult to see due to too small characters.
