<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a production method of alcohols, characterized in producing alcohols by converting lignocellulose to an organic acid by wet oxidation or by using a microorganism, esterifying the organic acid and hydrocracking the ester. <P>SOLUTION: The lignocellulose is treated by delignification with an organic acid such as peracetic acid before pressurized hydrothermal treatment so that lignin is not polycondensed to be recovered in a low molecular state and is used as a raw material of high molecular polymer and the like to get high addition value.
