Nitrated styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer described for use in making photographic protective layers is made by heating the monomers in toluene in the presence of azobisisobutyronitrile as initiator using highly purified styrene, filtering, washing the copolymer with hexane, nitrating at fairly low temperatures using fuming nitric acid in two preparations and mixed acid in a third, precipitating the product into water, washing it with further water and drying under vacuum. The effect of the treatment with nitric acid is to nitrate the benzene nuclei and hydrolyse the maleic anhydride units in the copolymer. |
