PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus and an image processing method, capable of achieving a depth expansion system which does not require use of an optical wavefront modulation element and is not dependent on an optical system. SOLUTION: The imaging apparatus includes: an imaging state adjusting part 300 capable of changing an imaging state of an object image obtained from an optical system 110 to an imaging element 120; an image processing device 140 having a function of obtaining an evaluation value on at least a focus from an image signal deriving from the imaging element 120 and a function of depth expansion processing for performing focus depth expansion processing for the image signal; and a control device 200 for controlling so as to perform focus depth expansion processing by dividing an image from the imaging element 120 into a plurality of areas, obtaining an evaluation value on a focus for each of the plurality of divided areas by the image processing device 140 while changing the imaging state by the imaging state adjusting part, estimating a distance from an object from the focal state where each evaluation value reaches a peak, and using a depth expansion filter corresponding to the each estimated distance from the object.
