PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the methods of diagnosing and/or treating tumors by administering a nucleoside analog which is activated by thymidylate synthase and/or thymidine kinase enzyme into a diagnostic or toxic metabolite, and also to provide uridine analog compounds, and compositions of the same having a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier. SOLUTION: The composition for treating tumors or cancers contains the uridine analog in an amount effective for reducing or inhibiting the replication or proliferation of tumor cells. The uridine analog is selected according to the method including the processes of: providing the uridine analog unsubstituted at the 5-position; examining the uridine analog on the activation by the thymidylate synthase; and selecting the uridine analog found to be activated by the synthase.
