PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus, capable of acquiring information useful for subsequent image processing steps, by enhancing the detection accuracy of document, and attaining cost reduction by eliminating the need of a read sensor dedicated to document detection. SOLUTION: An image reading apparatus comprises a first light source 110, irradiating one side of a document 8 with light; a second light source 210, irradiating another side of the document with light in timing different from that of the first light source 110; a reading means 1a for reading an image on the document irradiated from the first light source 110, by receiving the light reflected on the one side of the document and reading a transmissive image on the relevant document, by receiving the light irradiated from the second light source 210; and a control means for detecting a state of the document on the basis of the transmissive image on the document read by the reading means 1a.
