PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic focus adjusting device capable of detecting the amount and direction of change in the distance between a reference face and a lens for focusing on an object by imaging at a time. SOLUTION: When the object and an imaging region where a marker is arranged are imaged by an imaging part comprising the lens 12 and a camera 13, a marker extracting part 14 extracts the marker region from the imaged images, and a marker number of picture elements counting part 15 counts the number of picture elements in the extracted marker region. The information about focusing evaluation curve expressing the relationship of the number of picture elements in the marker region with the distance between the reference face and the lens 12 and the information about the number of picture elements in the marker region when focusing on the marker are stored in a memory 16. A focusing information detection part 19 obtains amount and direction of change of distance between the reference face and the lens 12 for focusing on the object based on the number of picture elements counted by the marker number of picture elements counting part 15 and the information stored in the memory 16.
