PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic linear scale requiring only one-time magnetization and only a half track width of a conventional one, and dispensing with a sensor for an original point. SOLUTION: One magnetic recording track constituting a scale domain is provided, and the magnetic field intensity of one side (a magnetization finish spot or a magnetization start spot) of both ends of the magnetic recording track is set higher than that of the scale domain. A scale signal and an origin signal are taken out from an analog signal detected by a magnetometric sensor by two kinds of comparators having large and small comparison levels.
