PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a filling apparatus for a packaging machine which suppresses a whirl up phenomenon of an article to be packaged at the time of filling by compressing at an appropriate time the article to be packaged in a funnel and filling it into a packaging bag under a small bulk condition and attempts to perform speed-up of a filling operation. SOLUTION: A rotary table 15 is provided so as to synchronize with a rotor 4, and a lower slide 22 fitted with the funnel 23 and an upper slide 25 fitted with an air pressure cylinder 26 making a pushing rod 27 for pressing the article to be packaged freely move are provided on the rotary table 15 so as to be able to elevate and lower. A first elevating/lowering means for making the lower slide 22 freely elevate and lower in the feeding process for the article to be packaged, a second elevating/lowering means for making the upper slide 25 freely elevate and lower in a process before the filling process, a third elevating/lowering means for the upper slide 25 and a fourth elevating/lowering means for the lower slide 22 in the filling process, are respectively installed on a fixed table 19. During moving/stopping from the after-process of the feeding process for the article to be packaged to the filling process, the article to be packaged in the funnel 23 is compressed by a pushing-in operation of the pushing rod 27 to decrease the volume.
