The motor vehicle shock absorber (1) has at least one damper (2) as a spring (3) of a porous elastomer sponge material. It is impregnated with a fluid (5) of a given viscosity and covered by a rubber mantle (4). The shock absorber is composed of a number of ring or polygonal elastomer elements (7-11) in a stack with a positive fit in an axial and/or radial direction. Ring-shaped chambers (13) are between the individual elements. Stiff materials (17) reinforce all or part of the elements.
