The aircraft comprises upper wings 20 and airfoils 40 arranged lower on the aircraft than the wings. Air flows are generated and exhausted through exhaust openings 130 on either side of the aircraft and arranged below respective flaps 60 connected to the wings 20. The exhaust openings 130 are arranged so that the exhausted air flows are directed toward the airfoils 40 so that the airflows impinge on their downstream edges 85. The airfoils 40 may also comprise flaps 80 towards which the exhausted air flows may be directed. The exhaust openings 130 may form part of telescopic extendable pipes 120 that are connected to the upper wing flaps 60 for movement with the flaps. The air flows are provided by bypass turbofan engines directing air out of upstream openings 95 from their bypass conduits. |
