To a fuel oil which yields an ash on combustion a minor proportion of a magnesium silicate or a mixture of magnesium oxide, hydroxide or carbonate with silica is added; the silica or mixture contains no more than 5 per cent of metals other than magnesium. The magnesium silicate may be prepared synthetically or be naturally occurring such as in talc, asbestine, enstatite, hectorite and commercial high magnesia earths; the silica may be synthetic or naturally occurring such as in quartz or Kieselguhr. Aluminium stearate may be added to the composition. The fuel oils may be residual petroleum oils with or without other liquid fuels such as distilled or cracked fuel oils; the residual fuel oils are particularly those which form on combustion an ash containing a major proportion of vanadium and/or sodium compounds. The fuel may be used in a gas turbine. Specifications 745,012 and 761,378 are referred to. The Provisional Specification refers also to the addition of olivine to the fuel oil.
|
