An adeno-associated virus (AAV) structural protein (I) which comprises at least one mutation that reduces the virulence of the virus. Independent claims are also included for: (1) A nucleic acid (II) that encodes (I); (2) A host cell (III) comprising (II); (3) Producing (I) by comprises: (i) culturing (III); and (ii) isolating (I); and (4) A pharmaceutical composition consisting of (I) and a suitable pharmaceutical carrier.
