The engine has a lubricant circuit provided for carrying out lubrication within a cylinder head (1) by a lubricant mist (24). The mist is directly or indirectly discharged from a sectionally hollow camshaft (2), which is arranged in the head. The camshaft is provided with lubricant discharge openings (21) in different dimensions and/or cross sections. A lubricant (17) coming from a mechanical component (7) i.e. camshaft adjuster (8), of the head is fed to the camshaft. Another mechanical component (15) i.e. roller cam follower (16), is arranged in the head and lubricated by the mist. An independent claim is also included for a method for lubricating mechanical components within a cylinder head of an internal combustion engine.
