The internal combustion engine has a combustion chamber and an exhaust system, in which an exhaust gas (10) leaving the combustion chamber is introduced and is directed over an exhaust gas recirculation unit. A compressor unit (7) compresses intake air taken from the surroundings and compressed intake air stream (11) is lead through a heat exchanger unit (9) that is arranged in the exhaust gas recirculation unit bypassing the combustion chamber. An independent claim is included for a method for operating an internal-combustion engine.
