The invention describes a method for diagnosing of septic complications in patients by determining the level of the C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP), its precursors or fragments thereof, especially the precursor of the C-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proCNP), in this patient and diagnosing the patient a having septic complications or being at risk of developing septic complications, if the level of CNP, its precursors or fragments thereof, especially NT-proCNP, is increased compared to normal levels.
