The present invention relates to a power tong jaw comprising: an upper plate and a lower plate; and at least three column members positioned between said upper plate and said lower plate, at least two of said column members having die insert grooves formed therein. Further, the invention relates to a method for constructing a power tong ja w comprising the steps of: providing a substantially flat upper plate and a substantially flat lower plate; providing at least one substantially elongated column member having a die insert groove formed therein; providing at least one substantially elongated column member not having one of said die insert grooves formed therein; and connecting said upper plate to said lower plate with said column members.
