The method involves executing determination of negative low speed advance with respect to an upper dead center, and executing determination of quantity of injected fuel and/or determination of richness of air-fuel mixture. Condition for increasing current value is evaluated and executed based on detection at a level of smoke produced by an internal combustion engine and/or detection of gas pressure using a gas pressure sensor in a cylinder. The condition for increasing the current value is verified. An independent claim is also included for a controller for an internal combustion engine to implement an internal combustion engine controlling method.
