<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating liquid that gives a polarizing film of a lyotropic liquid crystal compound having high single transmittance and polarization degree, and to provide a polarizing film. <P>SOLUTION: The coating liquid contains a solvent and a lyotropic liquid crystal compound separated by salting out, and has a chloride ion concentration of at most 3×10[4] ppm.
