PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce noise in starting an internal combustion engine in a vehicle comprising a hydraulic tensioner operated by the hydraulic pressure of oil supplied from a mechanical oil pump operated by the power of the internal combustion engine.

SOLUTION: An ECU carries out a program including steps of predicting whether an oil leakage from the hydraulic tensioner has occurred (S104) when engine starting conditions are established (yes in S100) and if HC adsorption control is required (yes in S102); outputting an engine cranking command (S106) when the occurrence of the oil leakage is predicted (yes in S104); and outputting a cancel sound of opposite phase to noise generated from a timing chain 108, to a loudspeaker (S108) when continuing the cranking.
