PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate the cause for image forming defects to the utmost by weakening the impact at the time of abutting on, to reduce the occurrence of staining of an electrode layer of an intermediate transfer medium having the electrode layer on one side, and to execute stable conveyance of the intermediate transfer medium. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus provided with a transfer device having the secondary transfer member (4) separating from and abutting on the intermediate transfer medium (1) has a separating/abutting mechanism (20) to allow the one side of the secondary transfer means (4) to abut on the medium first.
