PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hermetic compressor of high efficiency and high reliability by preventing a large amount of liquid from flowing into a compression chamber. SOLUTION: A suction muffler 125 comprises a communicating pipe serving for communication between a silencing space and an intake hole provided in a valve plate 123, and a tail pipe serving for communication between the silencing space and a space in a sealed container 101 above a suction pipe 113. The tail pipe comprises a discharge port opened to the silencing space, and a suction port opened to the space in the sealed container 101. The discharge port has a larger cross-sectional area than the suction port. Suction resistance in the tail pipe can thereby be reduced besides restraining a liquid refrigerant and a large amount of lubricating oil 103 flowing in from the suction pipe 113, from flowing into the compression chamber 115, thus attaining high efficiency and improvement in reliability.
