The method involves providing a memory device, in which vibrations of a turbocharger housing for a set of revolutions of an intact turbocharger are stored. The vibration of the housing is determined by an acceleration sensor, and a number of revolutions of the turbocharger is determined. The vibration of the housing in the number of revolutions of the turbocharger is compared with a vibration of the turbocharger at the revolutions. The turbocharger is determined to be defective when the vibration of the housing exceeds the vibration of the turbocharger. An independent claim is also included for a control unit with a diagnosis device, comprising a charge air-temperature sensor.
