PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a layer-2 switch device and a method of transferring layer-2 link state information, wherein the layer-2 link state information regarding the occurrence of link breakage and link breakage recovery of a layer 2 can be transferred to an opposite communication device easily without modifying functions of an existent relay device. SOLUTION: In the method of transferring the layer-2 link state information, layer-2 switch devices 110 and 120 each has a link state information transfer registration table wherein ports of link state notification objects and multicast IP addresses are related to each other. When the layer-2 switch device 110 detects the occurrence of the link breakage to a port 111, the device 110 transmits an IGMP packet which includes a multicast IP address related to the port and wherein a set value indicative of the occurrence of the link breakage is set to a type field. When receiving the IGMP packet, the opposite-side layer-2 switch device 120 sets the port related to the multicast IP address included in the IGMP packet into a link breakage state.
