PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface-coated cutting tool having a hard coating layer capable of exhibiting excellent lubricating performance and wear resistance during the high-speed cutting. SOLUTION: In this surface-coated cutting tool, the hard coating layer is vapor-deposited on the surface of a tool base formed of a tungsten carbide-based sintered alloy or a titanium carbonitride based cermet. The hard coating layer comprises a (Cr, Al) N layer or a (Cr, Al, M) N layer (where M is one or more elements selected from Si or B). Each of the (Cr, Al) N layer and the (Cr, Al, M) N layer is an alternately laminated structure of thin layers A in a cubic structure and thin layers B in a cubic structure and a hexagonal structure which are mixed therein.
