The device (SG) has a processor (R) with two processor cores (K1, K2) provided on a semiconductor substrate. The processor controls a passenger protection unit i.e. airbag. Two sensor connections (S1, S2) are assigned to respective processor cores at the semiconductor substrate. Signals of accident sensor systems e.g. air pressure sensor system, are assigned to respective sensor connections in such a manner that each accident sensor system and the processor core form an independent hardware path and a control decision is made for the hardware path. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling a passenger protection unit for a vehicle.
