The method involves carrying a treatment such as microbial decontamination and/or sterilization through a non-thermal plasma. The plasma that is operated under normal pressure is produced using a discharge molding or arrangement such as electron beam process, microwave discharge, hallow cathode arrangement or ozonizer. The plasma is operated in a pulsed or continuous manner and is injected for increasing the sterilization performance of different gases such as oxygen, ozone, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, noble gases, hydrogen, hydrogen peroxide and carbon dioxide in gaseous, liquid or solid form.
