PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical device capable of preventing leaked light from being made incident on a light receiving element through various propagation paths on a substrate even when a light emitting element, the light receiving element and a waveguide are formed on the same substrate, and to provide the manufacturing method of the optical device. SOLUTION: The optical device includes the light emitting element and light receiving element disposed along the principal surface of the substrate and the waveguides as propagation paths of light between the light emitting element and the light receiving element and, further, comprises a light-shielding area formed on an area along the principal surface of the substrate between at least two among the light emitting element, the light receiving element and the waveguide. The manufacturing method of the optical device includes a process of forming the light emitting element and light receiving element along the principal surface of the substrate and a process of forming the waveguides as propagation courses of light between the light emitting element and the light receiving element and, further, comprises a process of forming the light-shielding area on an area along the principal surface of the substrate between at least two among the light emitting element, light receiving element and waveguide.
