PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a passbook handling device compatible with a double stripe passbook and having high-speed magnetic stripe processing function, which solves the problem that it is required to move the double stripe passbook over a magnetic recording head many times to write magnetic data in one magnetic stripe in comparison with when writing magnetic data in the other magnetic stripe, thereby increasing the processing time. SOLUTION: When magnetic data are written in one magnetic stripe, the magnetic data are read in the direction opposite to that of the other magnetic stripe with respect to a format of the magnetic data, so that the passbook is conveyed in the same direction as when writing the magnetic data in the other magnetic stripe to write the magnetic data in one magnetic stripe, and a passbook conveying distance necessary for writing the magnetic stripe data and the number of turns in the passbook conveying direction can be reduced.
