PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To expand a compression self-ignition operation as much as possible while restraining advanced ignition. SOLUTION: An exhaust valve of a combustion chamber is closed prior to opening an intake valve of the combustion chamber, in an operation area for a compression self-ignition operation. When a desired engine torque is a predetermined torque or greater in the operation area for the compression self-ignition operation, a preliminary fuel if injected for combustion before the intake valve is opened, and self-ignition is done after the intake valve is opened, so as to inject main fuel for combustion after a compression top dead center. Also, when a desired engine torque is less than the predetermined torque, combustion does not occur before the intake valve is opened, and self-ignition is done after the intake valve is closed, so as to inject the main fuel for combustion after the compression top dead center.
