PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To combine starting performance and output performance in an engine equipped with a valve lift variable mechanism for continuously changing a lift amount of a suction valve. SOLUTION: The maximum lift amount and an opening angle can be changed in two stages by selectively connecting one of first/second sub cams 21H, 21L operated by first/second valve system cams 18H, 18L to the suction valve 16 by a connection mechanism 70, and the lift amount of the suction valve 16 can be continuously changed by oscillating a control arm 23 by the valve lift variable mechanism 17. At the time of stopping the engine, the valve lift variable mechanism 17 is controlled to be in a state of the minimum lift amount, and at the time of starting, the valve lift variable mechanism 17 is made to shift from the minimum lift amount state to a state of a predetermined starting lift amount while the suction valve 16 is driven by the first valve system cam 18H having a large profile, which can suppress an operation amount of the valve lift variable mechanism 17 to the minimum until a suction air amount necessary for starting is obtained, and enhance the starting performance without damaging the output performance of the engine.
