The method involves producing a thread and a reeling device, by a spin device for producing a cross coil, where the cross coil has a thread memory nozzle subjected with negative pressure for receiving a thread quantity required in connection with a spinning process and a suction nozzle subjected with the negative pressure. The suction nozzle is used during a cross coil/empty case replacement, and a negative pressure source (42) of a spinning machine-private negative pressure system (41) of the cross coil is connected automatically if necessary. An independent claim is also included for a device for operating a semi-automatic open end-rotor spinning machine.
